This forum helps me out everytime! I am getting much better at flying..but always nervous once climbing to our altitude.

The other day while taking off...the loud buzz of the engine was bothering me. It just seemed awfully loud.

Even the lady at the window next to me (frequent flier) thought it was louder than usual...and then I pretty much started feaking out (on the inside of course
and closed my eyes and prayed).

Never trust a random passenger when they tell you something isn't right. They don't have a clue. I've sat next to people like that before.

If there's really something wrong, the cockpit crew of the FA's will know about it.

Fact is, while Southwest flies all 737's, some are different that others. With the different 737's come different engines. The noises they make, while
all similar because they're all engines, are going to have differences.

No big deal.

Thanks for the replies!
Whenever I fly...I always pick row 5 for some reason! So it is the front of the plane. I only fly Southwest and only sat in front.
But yesterday for my return flight. I didnt have a pick..so I had to sit over the wing in row 10..which I actually liked!
But we had the same plane SWA 737-700 and no loud buzzing of engines on takeoff. Much quieter.

We even had turbulence the whole way back from STL to PHL flew through clouds and it didnt bother me so much.

I just wonder why those engines were so darn loud this past Friday?? Maybe it was the power of them..I dont know. Once we reached altitude..the lady next to me
said..something wasnt right with that noise.
I was like..OK can I freak out now?? lol (which is why I asked the FA if the noise was normal)

Just a guess, but the engines produce some vibrations. Perhaps the cabin interior was resonating a bit more than usual on you plane.

The engines on the 700 series are much quieter than the 200, 300, and 500 series. I don't know why, but from time to time certain engines have a certain
"buzzing" noise that eventually goes away as the plane gets to altitude and perhaps it has to do with less power being needed.

Anybody have insight as to why exactly this is? Does it have to do with the fan blades and slight imperfections yielding noisy results?

Certainly sitting forward of the engines helps. Also, you may hear some oscillating type noises from the engines being slightly out of balance. Again, nothing
to fear.

Hi Jerseyshoregirl!

Yes, I'm absolutely sure everything was fine. From what I've learned from the SOAR program, the noise from the engines depends on (1) where you're
sitting in the plane (if you're sitting right behind the wing on a 737 you will hear much more of the engines than if you're sitting in the front. If
this bothers you, try and get a seat nearer the front! and (2) the amount of power the pilots use during take-off. If they use full power, there will be more
noise. If they don't use full power (often they don't and this has nothing to safety - get the details from Cpt Tom) it will be less noisy.

best wishes,
Once we got to our cruising altitude, it was quiet and our FA's were coming around with drink orders..I asked him if that engine was louder than usual..he
said "no..in fact our older planes were even louder than that", So..immediately I felt better.
But why the very loud buzz of the engines on takeoff? It did seem louder than usual. But I guess all was fine!!!
