Hi again Everyone,

I have still been reading here, although I haven't posted in a while. I flew from Chicago to Phoenix and back in January with very little fear.

I have a trip coming up next week, though, that I'm getting a little anxious about. It's a round trip between Chicago and New Orleans on American
Airlines. But it was only after I'd paid for the ticket that I noticed the flight from Chicago to New Orleans is on a regional jet. A CRJ 700.

I know that...

Thanks, Steve.

Your comments always make me feel so much better. I am feeling a lot more ready for my flight. I think that I got locked into a silly mindset of "OK, I
can fly American Airlines MD-8Os on longer hauls and I know I am safe" without applying the same principles of flight, of what's good about ANY
American Airlines flight (regional/Eagle or not), about pilot training in the industry as a whole, etc etc etc" to more situations.

I am already feeling better, and I'm sure I'll feel better yet when this trip is behind me!

Thanks for being here, Steve. It matters; it helps.

Hi Meghan --

Thanks for your complimentary comments regarding my Alaska Airlines thread post.

As for the CRJ-700 -- it is a derivative of the Canadair Challenger corporate jet that has been flying for a number of years. There are a couple of such
derivatives -- some carry 50 passengers, and some -- such as the 700 -- carry 70 passengers.

I have had numerous rides in the CRJ-700. In fact, commuting home ORD-DTW from my next-to-last trip before retiring, in November, I rode in the cockpit of an
American Eagle CRJ-700. It has very sophisticated instrumentation; in fact, I doubt you'll find a more ultra-modern flight deck anywhere.

As I've said here several times before, as a group, my favorite First Officers were those who had a regional airline background. Most were from American
Eagle, but some came from elsewhere. Very sharp pilots, and with a great attitude (important to Captains!).

I find it just a bit distressing that...

CRJs are great planes. Fantastic, even. As far as being small, I far prefer them to any standard jet with 3-across seating in coach. No middle person, EVER.

You may feel more cramped because the interior width of the fuselage is smaller than, say, a 737, but I've always found the seats to be just a comfy. In
fact, on AA, the seat pitch (the distance from a given point on one seat to the exact same point on the next seat) is identical to a MD80 or 767, if I recall
correctly.

The problem is that regional airline jobs are not good. Pay is bad. There is frequent extreme fatigue due to the workload and scheduling. And the pilots have
less experience. The regional airlines say they give the same training as the major airlines do. Yes, put less experienced pilots need more.

It is much safer to fly a commuter airline than to drive. But we have a right to expect significant improvement in the performance of the regional airlines,
and I believe changes will soon be mandated. In the meantime, the pressure is already on the regionals to get their act together. So I would certainly fly
them.

can you explain what you mean by this? Are there safer regional jets and can we look for them by seeing what kind of plane is being flown?

I would love to have this info before I book my flight from NY to Kansas.

FYI I just found a very recent thread about the regional issue that I had somehow missed. Capt. Steve had a really thorough and helpful response (as usual!) in
the Alaska Airlines thread.
But still, any experience on the CRJ 700 or that route or anything else to help calm my nerves would be helpful. I know I have been the clear head on the
ground for others, and will gladly return the favor again after this flight! =)

I know that booking American is best because they are the only ones that don't outsource their maintenance. I also know that any jet is just as safe as
another. I also know that American hires quality pilots.

But the "regional" thing is still bothering me for some reason. I also feel a lot more comfortable flying in the winter, when the chance of T-storms
and such is diminished. It's also a night flight, which I like less.
