Hi All,

Im flying again for the second time in as many months, this time from Seattle to Boston on Alaska (direct!). Unfortunately, the recent incident stirred me up a
little bit and Im starting to freak. I had been doing pretty well with my flights lately, but with the Air France plane going down a few hours into cruise I
feel like I took a step back. My biggest fear is that something that has never happened before will happen during my flight, and there will be no way to
prepare for it....

CRob1, I have felt the same way about respecting the fear before. Like, if I abandon the fear, that somehow equals carelessness. Like my fear is somehow
protecting not only myself, but the idea of flying abstractly. After all, as we all know, crashes DO happen. So doesn't SOMEONE gotta pay attention to that
reality, for the safety of all?

The answer, of course, is of course not! There are entire industries devoted to continued and improved safety, and I still have to remind myself that my fears,
reactions, intellectual processes, or ideas have NOTHING AT ALL to do with the outcome of the flight.

I know you know this too. But just an affirmation that others think this too, and that it has NO impact on what actually happens.

All the more reason I believe SOAR works (even as I feel a little anxious to fly myself on Wednesday!). Perhaps this is good news in this context, but you are
never "cured" --you just make (substantial) progress.

I actually have the complete relief program, just having some issues with the hard drive on my computer at home! I will load them up tonight and bring them on
the plane... also have it on my iPhone. I've gotten pretty good at talking myself down, but for some reason I always think that this next flight will be
"the one." I mean it has to happen to someone right? I guess it doesnt "have to happen", but it does. Omens are a pain for me too. I
don't know why I do it to myself, but it almost gets to the point where I feel like I wont see my house again because someone said the word
"catastrophic".

I was driving to work today and saw a bunch of people on their cell phones and I tried to tell myself that I was much more likely to be in an accident with
these nuts than gliding through the air at 35,000 feet.

I think part of me feels like I have to be worried prior to a flight, kind of showing it some respect or its going to take it...

Currently, there is about one accident per five million flights. Over time, the technology should improve, but that is the rate now. So, as I see it, that is
what we should expect. That being the case, do we fly or not. Since flying is far safer than driving, and an argument can be made that it is even safer than
staying home, yes. The only question is how to deal with the feelings. We can help with that effectively. See http://www.fearofflying.com/relief/

Words of encouragement ... hmm ... have your tried SOAR Fast Track? I know I'm probably sounding like a broken record but SOAR was the only thing that
worked for me. Otherwise I would strongly encourage that you meet the pilots upon boarding and share with them that you are a fearful flier. As a guy, I know I
felt a little stupid doing it and wondering if the pilots would think I was a weenie. Don't want to sound sexist here but that is what I thought and
worried about. Every pilot I met was totally cool about it and it helped so much to see a face and be re-assured.

While some of us may think the Air France event has changed everything, it really hasn't. As Capt. Tom has said, flying is still as safe as it ever was. In
fact, I would venture to say it is even safer now ... because this event has raised awareness of a technical instrument issue that is being resolved as we
discuss this. So there you have it!
