Jen and Double E --

Capt. Tom is right. I flew the MD-80 series (of which the MD-88 is one) off and on for many years. And -- now that I'm retired from AA -- I STILL ride them
as a passenger. With no qualms at all.

You can look at safety "listings" all you want. But as far as I'm concerned, as a practical matter, those are meaningless. When you're
talking about a one-in-a-million (for example) versus a one-in-ten-million chance of getting killed in an airliner, the former would appear to be ten times as
dangerous.

But in BOTH cases, your chances of coming to grief are, practically speaking, Zero.

Which is why I take airline and airliner safety statistics with a grain of salt. Sure, there's ALWAYS a chance of being killed in an an airplane crash.
But, the chances of that are SO remote that it's not worth enduring any sleepless nights over.

Back to the MD-80. It's been in service since the early...

and I have to admit when I saw Capt Tom's listing of engine/airplane safety, which puts the MD 88 pretty low on the list, I think just before some Russian
made planes, I kind of freaked. It seems the "third generation" planes are more safe and the MD 88s are getting pretty old. The recent FAA scrutiny
of the AA MD 80s doesn't help my state of mind.

I also saw on a post here that Delta has been contracting out more of its maintenance, even out of the US.

So, can some of you reassure me about Delta and the MD 88s? I need to feel more confident about putting myself and my 4 year old daughter on this plane!!
