Question for the pilots -

I was curious how frequently you have had a mechanical incident occur that either by regulation, or your own judgment, you have diverted a flight because of?
I'm only curious about things passengers would be aware of .. flight being diverted or returning to the airport you took off from because of an engine
failing after take off, pressurization issues, etc. Not diversions due to weather, things passengers would never notice, or issues known to you before...

Hi, da --

Not very many diversions at all.

At AA, only three that I can think of offhand.

The first was in a B-727, Rochester, NY (ROC) to O'Hare (ORD). One of the fuel heat valves for one engine stuck open, which meant that the Flight Engineer
was unable to control the oil temperature. We shut down the engine and landed at Detroit (DTW).

Like Capt. Tom, I was the F/O at the time and thought this wasn't necessary. The 727 has three engines, and shutting down one of them still allows the
Captain to proceed to the destination if he deems it as safe as landing at an intermediate airport. I -- gently -- mentioned this to the Captain (the weather
was fine), but he still was nervous about the idea of continuing to ORD. OK, then, he was the boss, and my role now was to support him in his decision. Which I
did. (He even let me make the landing, even though he would have been totally within his rights as Captain to take the airplane from me and...

With what frequency have you had things of this nature occur in your commercial flying careers?
