Clients who have learned the Strengthening Exercise know we can control anxiety automatically during flight, and stop panic before it even has a chance to
start. But anticipatory anxiety has not been something we could control automatically. The 5-4-3-2-1 can control it, but it is a lot of work.

There is an exercise I would like you to try, because I believe it has a chance of being effective against anticipatory anxiety.

It is based on what psychologists call social referencing. The classic experiment in social referencing was the "visual cliff" experiment. Children
between six and twelve months of age were put on a table that had been extended by a piece of transparent plexiglas. The children would crawl quite happily on
the table, but would not venture out onto the transparent extension, even when a toy was placed at the far end.

When their mothers were brought into the experiment, and stood at the far end of the plexiglas, most of the...

Hi all,

I'm glad that some of you found the update helpful... I strongly believe that we all can do this!

So, now my flight is five days away. I leave next Wednesday. My twinges of anticipatory anxiety have gotten somewhat strong over the last few days, and
I'm pretty clear on why... and it doesn't have anything to do with the flight itself. I think it's due to separation anxiety (from my daughter --
for the first time, an entire ocean will be between us!) and some performance anxiety regarding the conference I'm attending. Mixed up in there too is a
good bit of plain old excitement.

As for what I've been doing to stem the anticipatory anxiety: I've cut way down on my caffeine intake, I'm reviewing the strengthening exercise, I
remind myself to stay in the moment and breathe (this helps to nip the what-if thoughts in the bud), and I'm trying to exercise daily. And I'm posting
here! Anyone else have any...

In my experience, flying into anywhere hot in the summertime is bumpy. Growing up around SFO, bumps were an off an on thing on landing. However, now, living in
the DFW area for the past decade, I've become used to them as part of a normal landing/takeoff.

Also, it's not just the temp that can cause turb. Denver can be a regularly bumpy spot, due to the wind patterns off the Rockies. Nothing abnormal, though.

If any of it was unsafe, the pilots wouldn't be flying through it.

Bella, the sun heads up the earth, and that head causes air currents. These air currents are kind of like heat rising off a radiator. It is slow-moving. The
bumpy ride is because the plane is moving so fast.

Reminds me. There is at Air Force base in Vegas (Nellis AFB) and when I was there for training, we flew across the desert in the F-105 at 560 knots which is
about 645 MPH, and because of those little heat-rising-off-a-radiator bumps, it was like trying to shake fillings out of my teeth!

But the planes? They couldn't care less.

That's awesome -- I'm really glad you've experienced such progress. I'm most grateful to Capt Tom for the insight that fear of flying is all
about emotional safety. I have little issue with takeoff, and same goes for landing -- it's just the middle part where nothing happens, apart from
occasional turbulence, that stresses me out. If I was truly scared of flying, I'd be frightened during landing as well, but because the flight is coming to
an end, I feel in some kind of control and my anxiety disappears. Of course, since doing the program, the middle part has been getting better as well. I even
find just laughing at my anxiety and acknowledging how baseless it is helps also.

Thanks for letting us know there is hope!!
Do you feel increased anziety while landing, or when antipating the trip?
For some reason I am usually really calm during the landing. Even if things are bumpy... I am just so happy it is almost over.
But I stress about it on the days leading up to the trip,,, especially the weather. And I have actually avoiding booking trips to Denver and Las Vegas since I
hear the landings are bumpy.

so I'll probably have a couple of interviews -- another source of stress. Previously, the brevity of the trip alone would have made me want to cancel; I
would have started thinking and worrying about the return trip as soon as I landed -- and I would've canceled just in order to avoid worrying about feeling
worried!
