A couple weeks ago on approach to JFK the pilots asked the flight attendents to take thir seats on approach because it was going to be a little bumpy. By the time we reached 4000' (seat backs had the inflight monitor) it was pretty rough. It seemed to be getting rougher as we decended. As the plane pitched back and forward, side to side you could hear the engines whining up and down, I imagine to keep altitude. I remember seeing the landing lights and right as i saw them the pilot hit the gas and we were going back up. The turbulance was unbelievable to the point that the pilot came on and said not to worry that everything is under control but that his wind sheer warning indicated that it was outside the safety limits to attempt to land the aircraft. We ended up going to Philly. I guess my point is that I really don't have fear of turbulance any longer. If the aircraft didn't have problems in than these things are really built well. I couldn't imagine it being any worse. I have a new found respect for the capabilities of these airliners. I look back at being nervous when a plane would hit a few bumps and realize how silly I was.
There is a bit of comfort knowing your over land though if something were to go wrong............
