Alright so next sunday I am flying to Ottawa from Deer Lake, I have flown once before but I was merely 2 years old so I have no recolection of it at all. So I
am very, very nervous about it and I have no clue what to expect. Should I be scared ? what should I bring with me ? Also what am I going to do in Pearson for
7 hours... Im not allowed to leave my terminal which is terminal one (1). Any help would be greatly appreicated.

Hi Tony,
Of course, there is nothing for you to be scared of but that doesn't mean that you won't have some anxiety. Any new experience, particularly one that places you in such a different environment, can be both exciting and anxiety producing. People told me before my first flight that it would be just like sitting in my living room - don't believe it. The plane will have its own series of sounds and movement that are perfectly normal and safe but unusual for the first time flyer. Just remember that those sounds and movements are part of the process and nothing to be afraid of. The message board and library here at SOAR has lots of information on the experience of flying that will help you to identify what those sounds are so that you won't be surprised. As for the layover - I always travel with a carry bag that has a paperback book, crosswords, sudokos, my DVD player, and a journal to keep notes in. I find that on a long flight those things help to keep me busy. I'm not familiar with Pearson but there probably will be places to eat and maybe shop even within the secure area. Are you leaving today (26th) or next Sunday. I have a friend from Calgary and I'll find out if she's ever been through Pearson. If she has any other tips, I'll let you know. If you're flying today - enjoy the ride and know that you'll arrive safe and sound. Pam |

tony1233-
You mention that you're not "allowed" to leave terminal 1. Why not? |

Here's a list of shops in Terminal 1. A seven-hour layover is a pain, but at least you can get a decent meal. You might be interested in the SOAR "Take Me Along" course -- it's an audio or video recording of Captain Tom explaining what goes on at every stage of the flying process. It might help you put all the new experiences in context. Good luck! |

Note from Capt. Tom I know everyone worries about weather, but pilots really do not worry about it. We simply - instead of worrying about it - completely prepare for it. Before going to the plane, we review the weather at the destination. If it is not 100% sure to be within legal limits when we arrive at the destination, we must specify an alternate airport in our planning documents, and load on plenty of fuel for going to the destination airport, and then if need be, diverting to the alternate airport. The legal limits are conservative. Even when weather is slightly outside the legal limits, any airline pilot could still land safely. You can rely on the captain never to land when the weather is not legal, and legality limits are reached prior to safety limits. If you are still anxious, call me and we can talk it over. I'm at 877 332-7359 from 10 AM until 7 PM Eastern time. For effective help, even if you are flying in a day or two, sign up now at www.fearofflying.com/fasttrack and call me when you finish Clip 9 so I can make sure you are all set. |

Using Weather Information If you enter your ZIP Code or City at the top of the weather presentation, it will give you weather for your area. Or, you can enter your destination ZIP Code or City.
Click on the "LOCAL RADAR" button to see whether or not there are thunder- Turbulence, though it may cause anxiety, does not mean anything is wrong. Turbulence does not mean danger. The plane can handle far more turbulence than Mother Nature can dish out. Though flying in turbulence is safe, it doesn't feel safe. And here is where the SOAR programs come in. We can help you feel as safe when you fly as you actually are. You can see these programs at www.fearofflying.com/store. |
