this while qantas thing... |

Ok, i wasn't getting THAT nervous before...but now i'm starting to get that deep pit in the stomach feeling. I'm leaving for New Zealand for my
honey moon in three weeks, flying qantas into Auckland from LA. I'm very excited, but now i'm seeing "a string of incidents" as it's been
declared having to do with Qantas (flying blind over the pacific, the computer malfunction, the whole in the plane etc.). I know i'm probably overblowing
it, and going into that whole "this is a sign" stage, that I'm relieved to know many of us fearful flyers go through...but am I safe? I'm
only hearing of Qantas flights that have this problem. And now i'm reading this whole speal from Capt. Tom about not flying airlines without unions or what
not and now i'm questioning how strong Qantas's is, can i even get on this plane?and all those awesome mind games i can play with myself am i being
stupid? or is this a legit concern?

Qantas doesn't have as many flights as the major, legacy carriers (UA, AA, DL, etc.). However, it has never, to my knowledge, had any fatal incidents. You could change airlines, but I don't see the need. If you were flying to Russia on some Russian carrier, I'd recommend considering another airline. But Qantas, in my opinion, is safe. |

Qantas has a great reputation because they have not had an accident, but it is also fact that they have only done one million flights. An airline like Delta
has had accidents, but one in FIVE million. If Qantas still has no accidents when they have five million, I'll be impressed.
But I would be even more impressed if they pull of FIFTEEN million flights with no passenger fatalities. Who has done that? Southwest!!! Still, Qantas is a good airline. They have had some incidents and some press about it. A lot of the press comes because Qantas is in a big fight between management and the mechanics who are going to lose their jobs if Qantas gets to do the outsourcing it wants to. |

Capt. Tom, you're not exactly instilling me with confidence to get on that plane...

I thought Capt Tom was cautiously optimistic about flying Qantas. The truth isn't aways rosy, but in the case of Qantas, it's certainly not black.
You'll be just fine. |

Cautiously optimistic? Actually completely confident about Qantas! I'm just laying out the facts that Qanta's reputation as an accident-free airline
needs to be recognizes as less impressive than the record that American, Continental, Delta, USAir and particularly Southwest have established.
Though all those U.S. airlines have had passenger accidents except Southwest, one accident in around five-million flights is a more reliable indicator that no accidents in one-million flights. The Qantas record is excellent, but the airline that really deserves the Qanta's reputation is Southwest! |

Note from Capt. Tom I know everyone worries about weather, but pilots really do not worry about it. We simply - instead of worrying about it - completely prepare for it. Before going to the plane, we review the weather at the destination. If it is not 100% sure to be within legal limits when we arrive at the destination, we must specify an alternate airport in our planning documents, and load on plenty of fuel for going to the destination airport, and then if need be, diverting to the alternate airport. The legal limits are conservative. Even when weather is slightly outside the legal limits, any airline pilot could still land safely. You can rely on the captain never to land when the weather is not legal, and legality limits are reached prior to safety limits. If you are still anxious, call me and we can talk it over. I'm at 877 332-7359 from 10 AM until 7 PM Eastern time. For effective help, even if you are flying in a day or two, sign up now at www.fearofflying.com/fasttrack and call me when you finish Clip 9 so I can make sure you are all set. |

Using Weather Information If you enter your ZIP Code or City at the top of the weather presentation, it will give you weather for your area. Or, you can enter your destination ZIP Code or City.
Click on the "LOCAL RADAR" button to see whether or not there are thunder- Turbulence, though it may cause anxiety, does not mean anything is wrong. Turbulence does not mean danger. The plane can handle far more turbulence than Mother Nature can dish out. Though flying in turbulence is safe, it doesn't feel safe. And here is where the SOAR programs come in. We can help you feel as safe when you fly as you actually are. You can see these programs at www.fearofflying.com/store. |
